After spending time diving in the Maldives, we were looking for a contrasting experience—culture, wildlife, food, and a sense of place beyond the ocean. Sri Lanka turned out to be the perfect choice. With short, affordable flights from Malé to Colombo, it’s an ideal add-on before or after a Maldives dive trip.
Unfortunately, we only had six days, which makes this journey a short trip rather than a full Sri Lanka round tour. Still, it was enough to fall in love with the country—and to realize that many of these places deserve far more time. What follows is our carefully curated route along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, combining city life, colonial history, relaxed beach towns, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Colombo: A Hidden Colonial Gem in the Middle of the City
Our journey began in Colombo, where we spent our first night at Havelock Place Bungalow (often referred to as Havelock Palace). This boutique hotel is a true hidden gem—and one of those rare places you instantly regret booking for just one night.
Tucked away behind a high gate in a quiet side street, far from the usual tourist routes, the property feels like stepping into another era. The colonial-style villa is beautifully restored, surrounded by lush greenery, with a peaceful pool area and an atmosphere that feels almost surreal considering you are right in the middle of a bustling capital city.
The restaurant GINI, located on-site, deserves a special mention. The food is refined, creative, and absolutely outstanding—easily one of the culinary highlights of our trip. Sitting there in the evening, surrounded by colonial architecture and soft lighting, it was hard to believe that chaotic Colombo traffic was just minutes away.
We truly wished we had stayed longer, but our driver was already waiting for us the next morning.
Traveling Sri Lanka: Why a Private Driver Makes All the Difference
Sri Lanka requires more planning than destinations like Bali—especially if you are short on time. While traveling by train is absolutely possible (and famous for its breathtaking scenery), it requires flexibility and time.
Since we only had six days, we decided to book a private driver in advance, which turned out to be one of the best decisions of the entire trip. Our driver stayed nearby in local accommodations and was exclusively available for us throughout the journey.
This allowed us to:
- Travel comfortably and efficiently
- Take scenic coastal roads
- Stop spontaneously for photos or viewpoints
- Visit places along the way without stress
We booked our tour through HH Tours Sri Lanka, and the experience was excellent from start to finish. Communication was clear, friendly, and professional, and everything was perfectly organized well in advance.
Fort Galle: History, Culture, and Coastal Beauty
Leaving Colombo, we followed the coastal road south toward Fort Galle, one of Sri Lanka’s most historic and beautiful cities. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fortified by the Dutch, Galle Fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Walking along the old ramparts, you can still feel the layers of history—colonial architecture, old churches, lighthouses, and narrow streets filled with cafés, small boutiques, and galleries. The ocean crashes against the fort walls, creating a dramatic contrast between history and nature.
Even with limited time, Galle left a strong impression and is absolutely worth a longer stay if your itinerary allows.
Mirissa: Quiet Luxury and Whale Watching Adventures
After a few hours, we continued on to Mirissa, where we stayed two nights at Kiss Blossom Hotel—another absolute hidden gem.
Set slightly away from the busy beach areas, the hotel offers a calm, upscale atmosphere with a beautiful pool and fantastic food. It’s the kind of place where everything feels intentional: quiet mornings, attentive service, and a sense of privacy that is becoming increasingly rare.
Whale Watching: An Honest Perspective
Mirissa is well known for whale watching, particularly blue whales and humpbacks. We decided to try it—but unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side.
It’s important to know that whale-watching tours can last 4 to 8 hours, depending on conditions and sightings. The ocean can be rough, and you definitely need to be seaworthy. While we didn’t spot whales this time, the experience itself was still impressive—and a reminder that wildlife encounters are never guaranteed.
After that long day, we dedicated the next one entirely to relaxation: pool time, great food, and enjoying the calm before our next adventure.
Yala National Park: Wildlife at Its Best
From Mirissa, we traveled inland toward Yala National Park, staying at EKHO Safari Hotel in Tissamaharama. The location is ideal for early safari departures, and the hotel itself offers a comfortable base surrounded by nature.
Full-Day Safari in Yala
The highlight here was undoubtedly our full-day safari. Also here, we had our private Guide and private Vehicle. Yala is famous for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world—and while sightings are never guaranteed, we were incredibly lucky.
Over the course of the day, we encountered:
- Elephants
- Leopards
- Crocodiles
- Monitor lizards
- A wide variety of birdlife
Spending an entire day in the park allowed us to experience the changing atmosphere—from early morning light to the golden tones of late afternoon.
We stayed an additional night to explore the surroundings at a slower pace, which was absolutely worth it after such an intense day.
Back to Colombo: Urban Luxury and Local Life
For our return journey, we took the inland highway back to Colombo. While this route is toll-based, it’s fast, well maintained, and very comfortable—especially after days on coastal roads.
Back in Colombo, we stayed two nights at the Shangri-La Colombo, a modern, upscale hotel with excellent facilities including a pool and spa. The location made it easy to explore the city, from local markets to waterfront walks.
What stood out most here was experiencing everyday life in a Sri Lankan megacity—busy streets, food stalls, cafés, and the constant movement that defines Colombo.
Final Thoughts: A Perfect Add-On to a Maldives Dive Trip
Six days were simply not enough—and that’s perhaps the strongest compliment you can give a destination. Many of the places we visited deserve far more time, but even as a short trip, Sri Lanka worked beautifully.
