If there is one destination that leaves even experienced divers speechless, Raja Ampat easily tops the list. Located off the northwest tip of New Guinea, this remote Indonesian archipelago is famous for hosting the highest marine biodiversity on Earth.
During a 12-night liveaboard diving safari aboard the Emperor Harmoni, I explored the reefs of the Misool region, experiencing world-class macro life, manta encounters, pristine coral gardens, and the unique rhythm of life at sea.
Getting to Raja Ampat: From Malé to Sorong
Reaching Raja Ampat is an adventure in itself. Starting from Malé (Maldives), my route took me via Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, before continuing on a domestic flight with Garuda Indonesia to Sorong, the main gateway to Raja Ampat.
The journey is long, but breaking it into stages makes it manageable. I strongly recommend arriving at least one day early in Sorong to allow for flight delays and proper rest before boarding your liveaboard.
One Night in Sorong: Swiss-Belhotel
I stayed at Swiss-Belhotel Sorong, a popular choice for liveaboard guests. The hotel is clean, comfortable, and conveniently located around 30 minutes from the airport. While Sorong itself has limited attractions, spending one calm night here is the perfect transition before heading out to sea.
The Emperor Harmoni team arranged smooth transfers to the port in comfortable vehicles, making the logistics effortless.
Boarding the Emperor Harmoni Liveaboard
After a short Zodiac ride, stepping aboard the Emperor Harmoni felt like entering a floating boutique resort. The welcome was warm and professional, followed by detailed safety briefings and a full fire drill.
The 48-meter traditional wooden phinisi, built from Sulawesi ironwood, accommodates up to 24 guests in 12 spacious cabins. Equipped with Starlink internet, the vessel combines modern comfort with authentic Indonesian craftsmanship.
Cabins are cozy and well-designed, communal areas inviting, and the crew attentive throughout the trip. Dive operations run smoothly—essential on a multi-dive-per-day itinerary.
What sets the Emperor Harmoni apart is the balance between professional dive logistics and relaxed social atmosphere. Evenings on deck, sharing dive stories under a sky full of stars, quickly become unforgettable moments.
Diving Raja Ampat: Why It’s World-Class
Raja Ampat’s reputation is well deserved. The diversity of dive sites and marine life is simply staggering.
Highlights of Raja Ampat Diving
- Soft coral gardens covering channels and slopes in vibrant colors
- Exceptional macro diving, including pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and ghost pipefish
- Manta cleaning stations, offering close yet respectful encounters
- Healthy reef systems with outstanding coral coverage
- Exhilarating drift dives, guided safely by experienced local dive guides
Each day followed a comfortable routine: early-morning dive, breakfast, second dive, lunch, rest, and an afternoon dive. One optional night dive was offered and proved outstanding for macro lovers.
Unlike more spontaneous destinations, Raja Ampat diving requires meticulous planning. Many sites are limited to a single vessel at a time, with strict time slots. Managing four dive groups under these conditions is challenging—but the cruise directors executed it flawlessly.
Life on a Raja Ampat Liveaboard
Spending twelve days at sea allows you to slow down and fully align with the ocean’s rhythm. Sunrises are spectacular, days are filled with underwater surprises, and evenings are perfect for reviewing photos and sharing stories.
Dive briefings were highly professional, using large screens to explain reef topography and expected marine life. Gear handling was exemplary—after the initial setup, the crew managed everything efficiently.
After each dive, warm towels, friendly smiles, and perfectly organized dive stations made the experience effortless and comfortable.
Liveaboard Cuisine: A True Highlight
Food on liveaboards is often functional, but on the Emperor Harmoni, it was exceptional.
Every meal was freshly prepared, flavorful, and beautifully balanced. Indonesian and Asian influences were combined with international comfort dishes, creating variety throughout the trip. Special mention goes to the service team: being greeted by name from day one made the experience feel personal and welcoming
Special Diets & Hot Pot Night
Dietary requirements were handled with great care, provided they were communicated in advance. One evening featured a hot pot dinner, offering a relaxed, social atmosphere and delicious food—one of the culinary highlights of the safari.
After the Safari: Sorong to Sanur (Bali)
After returning to Sorong, I flew to Sanur, Bali, which proved to be the perfect place to unwind. With cafés, beaches, and easy access to Ubud, Bali offers a gentle transition back to land life.
For those who still want to dive, Bali also delivers excellent wreck diving, macro sites, manta encounters, and seasonal mola mola sightings. (see also the review about Bali Villa Dive Resort)
